trek fest is um

really a small town faire. Its kind of neat that they have the whole star trek thing label on it but really its just a small town fair with nothing much more to it. We only stayed about 1/2 an hour. I did see the future birthplace of Captain Kirk though. It's behind an alleyway. Someone had taped a picture of Uhura to the back. Funny.

hellboy darkness calls#3

Something about Hellboy and the mythology surrounding the book really draws me in. There is a sense of proper place in the storytelling and yet the humor of life is always present through Hellboy himself. Im enjoying this series much more than The Island, and I can see it wrapping up wonderfully over the next few issues.

I need a doctor?

Through various sites Ive been able to catch the Doctor Who episodes and Torchwood as well that havent aired over here yet. Im quite happy to say that David Tennant, just makes season 3 enjoyable. Im about half way through right now and its just so good. It's such a happy show and even it's dark moments can be lifted away with a smile.
It's really growing on me.

Fantastic Four 2 is actually pretty good.

I can't believe I'm writing this but Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer is actually pretty good. It's much better than Spiderman 3. I dont think I could have even thought that months ago.
The difference between this one and the first one is astonishing. The first was overly dramatic, cheesy and just too long winded. This one is still cheesy at times, but appropriate and the heroes powers are used at the right times and not just too show how cool they are. The one thing that really separates this movie from the other one though is Doug Jones as the Silver Surfer. It's amazing that a creature actor can have such a big impact. He was wonderful in Pan's Labrythinh and Ill have to go back and watch Hellboy to see him as Abe again. The characther deserves his own movie. One set entirely in space. It could be a great way for Marvel to expand their film Universe. Take him to the Kree Skrull war. You could make three movies on that alone. I just cant get over how cool the surfer is in this film even using cgi technology from terminator 2 era. I would much rather see Silver Surfer movie before we get a Fantastic Four 3. Still I will definetly be watching this movie on dvd.

Moon Knight#11 Mouse Guard, Oceans

Just got back from Ocean's 13. Its good stuff. Feel like some of the star power was wasted with such a large cast but its a good caper flick.

Picked up moon knight # 11 today. its the weakest issue in the series so far but still very good.

Also read Mouse Guard collection. Good stuff in the fantasy genre which comics don't have an abundance of.

a blow to my heart.

"As much as it breaks our hearts to write these words, the final issue of Punk Planet is in the post, possibly heading toward you right now." that's how an email I just received started. This is really bad news as one of the last great music magazines out has called it a day. Also one of the last places the really tiny operations like Lucky Creature could afford to run ads in. I have feelings of saying that's it, it's over call it a day, print is dead. But I don't really believe that. Print lives on but it's a different monster now, and it can't continue to be something sold en masse. And music some could argue as sold as physical discs is dead, but again it's now a different monster and it can't be sold the same way. We as the small labels, and publishers have to change our way of operating, or die. It's easy for me. Maybe I shouldn't say this because it speaks volumes, but I have lost money on EVERYTHING I have ever released. Some more than others. Things like the Exercises in Breathing cd came close to breaking even(mostly because I toured with it for four years but other's even the wonderful Mark Schwaber album(possibly the best sounding cd we've ever done) have sold far less than we had hoped. It's strange, things we should be having trouble selling like Lucky Creature Attacks are easily our most succesful. It's a strange time to be in the print business but it's where we will stay. Sure we may only release 3-4 items a year, but they will be on paper, on disc, on vinyl, and in your hands. Maybe someone will come along a fill the void left by Punk Planet. I doubt it. Most likely we will get another Rolling Stone or god forbid Alternative Press. Come what may, Lucky Creature isn't going anywhere, and I encourage the other labels and publishers out there, to keep on publishing, searching and working. Print is not dead, it's just a different monster.

Martin Firrell and Nathan Fillion's Super Secret Thingy.

Martin Firrell is an artist who works with words. Really big words on public buildings. And words that make you think about humanity. His latest project feature's none other than the wonderful Nathan Fillion. It is a neat 'art video' and I like that it actually has a point. So many Video Art pieces I see are too personal to the artist and don't have any lasting impact. This is also free to be seen right on the internet. You don't have to travel to see this and you can enjoy the entire thing in a little under five minutes. Enjoy. Watch Hero Here

Wed Comic Reviews, VERTIGO edition.

Loveless # 18. Yeah yeah yeah, more people killing each other. This has got to be the slowest comic ever. yet I can't turn away. B-

American Virgin the 1st Trade. This is an o.k. Vertigo book. It does a nice twist on the whole televangelist thing, and has some truly funny moments. But I can't see this being the next Fables or Transmetropolitan.

I heartily reccomend Brian K Vaughan's Pride of Bagdahd. It is a very neat look at the war we started and also surpising ends with a real sad outcome. If this were to ever get optioned for film I have no doubt the producers would change the ending, because if they didn't there would be some crying kids leaving the theatre. One of the few comics I've read recently that made me say wow. I should start reading more of Vaughan's stuff. I always liked Y the Last man, and he seems to have a very good sense of our world right now.

So what's up with the releases anyway?

So, Jonathon's Poster is out, it rocks and it's JUNE! What's next on the plate at the lucky house? Good question. There are about three to four Artists posters that have been requested to be made from our end. It's all about when the artist get the time to create them. Music, there are two bands who I would love to put something out by, but that isn't anything that's really fast approaching. (that could change if I saw something amazing at a show or other factors aligned the gods) I'm still working on the Pea's comic, which we will be publishing, and then there is still something else that I mentioned last year, that really just may take a long, long, long time to happen, but it's being processed in my head.
So anyway while your waiting, order something you may have missed before. It's all good for my soul.

Nice weekend.

We just got back into Iowa City.
Had a blast on day one in Chicago. We first went to COlumbia College for the Artist Book Fair where we saw some pretty neat stuff and some things I think that took the definition of 'book' a little to far. I left Jess there for a while to do some networking and I headed up to Graham Crackers and Millenium Park. HAd a great lunch at HI Tea, and then headed over to The Printer's row bookfair filled with streets of books both used and new. Finally we hopped on the blue line to go to Quimby's. It was nice to see Lucky Creature Attacks next to other compilations like Greatest Comic Anthologies of 2006. :> Jess had sold all of her stuff and made enough money to pay for her purchases and more!
Quimby's is really a very unique comic store. If you ever get to go you should. Not a Superhero book in sight, and the store is probably twice the size of most comic shops. check it out when you can.
We drove into wisconsin for the night to get ready for day 2.

At the Midwest Gaming Classic. Pinball machines galore! We probably played our ten dollar entrance fee just in the amount of quarters we would have had to put into those machines. I also got a awesome Ice Climber sound figure from Japan, Strider for the Genesis, and a Hook Pinball flyer for my brother. Saw more systems that I never knew existed and even got some down time with an beautiful Neo Geo. Awww...
We had a great drive back stopping to see the crazy Grotto in Dickeyville, Wi and building browsing in Mt. Vernon.

UPDATE 1. Added pictures.

We're heading out to Chicago in just a few hours so Im going to get some sleep. Hopefully the weather holds and we will have nice driving conditions all weekend. If your in Milwaukee for the MGC, I'll be the one wearing the Mega Man shirt and probably either playing pinball or scouring old Genesis carts. See you Monday.

Trailer buzz!

So the winter is going to continue in the past few years tradition of having big summer movies as well. In december we get Will Smith in I am Legend The trailer looks neat but Im afraid like I Robot before it it will be all action and none of Richard Matheson's original story. Hollywood has been trying to make this for years, so I hope it works out.

American GangsterRidley Scott directing Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington in a loose Biopic.

Golden Compass
And then on Christmas we get Phillip Pullman's Golden Compass, which new line hopes launches a new franchise.

Check the trailers if any of them seem interesting.

New Warriors #1

So One of the things Civil War has allowed Marvel to do is to explore and rehash some of their older and recently unused properties. Omega Flight seems to be doing o.k. for them and here come's the New Warriors. I really enjoyed the first 70 or so issues of the first New Warriors series, never really read volume two until it had been cancelled. But being the Marvel boy that I am, they were always as close to the Teen Titans as I cared to get. This rehash has a nice set up. Someone or some group who are not registered heroes are bagging bad guys and leaving them for the cops. Just like the old days. Tony STark is mad, especially because they are leaving the NW's tag at the sight. We see one of Grant Morrison's best creations during his run on X-men Beak, except now he's just an average looking guy since he lost his mutant powers during House of M. Seem a bit confusing? Yeah I guess you need to know the Marvel U's storyline for the past three years to get any of it, but I'm hoping this book will be able to stand on it's own and make a brand new name for the new "New Warriors".

Are you kidding me?

This is a screenshot of Dowdy Ficklen Stadium from the game NCAA 08. Wow. do you know how many saturdays I sat there? This is the stadium to a 100 percentile. you can even see the middle school behind the scoreboard. I can't wait to see what else the've included. Hopefully the canon goes off after we score. This get's me so pumped.

knocked up is knocked up funny!

A very nice comedy with a very sappy ending. This may very well steal the thunder from Mr. Depp and company. Once buzz spreads for this film. It has that borderline humor between gross and charming and just features a wonderful cast all around. Great if you need a laugh and hey who doesn't?

June Movies

Knocked up comes out today and looks to provide the 40 year old virgin fun of last year.

Then on June 8th is Ocean's 13 and the actors involved make these movies worth it.

Then on June 15th we have Fantastic Four 2. It doesn't have to be good, just better than the first one and I think everyone would be happy. Man we've lowered our standards.
