3 for feb!

So here's my valentines month movie previews. There is actually a whole lot of movies coming out in Feb and march( more so than usual) and some actual omg movies as well(300 I'm counting on you) but for feburary only 3 really stand out for me.
Breach comes out Feb 16th and one actor has sold me on it. Chris Cooper is just so good, has been since American Beauty. I can get over the fact that Ryan Phillipe is in it because of this. And hey its a thriller in winter. Why not?

This is the other movie on feb 16th and I admit it probably will be pretty bad. But when you have a discussion on what kind of superheroes you could pull off five years ago Ghost Rider wasn't one of them. The technology has come so far, I hope this isn't all razzle Dazzle, cause If a flaming skull on a bike doesn't work then you can throw out all the other blist heroes chances of a silver screen appearance.

Then on the 23rd is Craig Brewers follow up to HUstle and Flow. Black Snake Moan stars samuel l jackson and christinia Ricci. and well this is the movie alot of critics said should have been released in time for the oscars. O.k. What are you going to see in febuary?

Pan's Labyrinth. A horror/fairytale movie for adults.

Guillermo Del Toro latest film is dark, harsh, and yet still has a sense of make believe that you can get only on film. It looks like he kept his crew together from Hellboy as the make up is still top notch and the overall look of the film matches the previous one in style and lighting. This is the kind of genre movie that needs to be made more of. It's serious, and it takes itself and it's creatures seriously. Wonderful performances all around and like any good fairy tale it follows it's path.
A.
Doug Jones has created a niche for himself as our creature actor(abe sapien, silver surfer) and this friend below. The Pale Man has one of the best five minutes of creature feature since Godzilla first arrived. He's scary.

moon knight # 7

quick somebody get me a essential moon knight trade. Huston knows this characthers history and he is digging deep. I need to do some research. Has anyone heard if Mavel has pushed this to a full series yet? It's soo good.

Appleseed Cast, Asobi Sesku, Skursula

Show last night was pretty good. It's strange but I can definetly see that Appleseed doesn't hold the same place they did for me so long ago. They are such a good, tight, talented band. But now after so many bands they also seem quite boring. Its a shame because there not doing anything wrong and there songs are as good now as they were then, my ears have just changed over time I guess.
Asobi Sesku really rocks and I suggest anyone who can go see this band, It's like a new wave blonde redhead.
And the best band for me throughout the evening was Iowa City's own Skursula. Check out their Myspace page for a taste and I have a feeling you'll get into it as well.

Show tonight!

Going out in a bit to see Appleseed Cast, Asobi Sesku and Skursula tonight. I first saw Appleseed Cast when I set up a show for them at my high school. Yeah it's been that long ago. It's amazing they are still a band. Anyway it will be the first show I've braved in quite some time. I think its a good thing, as I've receded more and more into my little computer/quais office in my free time.

Two Genre Shows Return

Battlestar Galactica continued it's third season last night and after watching a pretty great finish to the Colts-Patriots game I was ready for some space opera melodrama. The show isn't hitting the peaks for me that it did during it's second year but it is still easily one of my top three shows to watch every week, and I'm pulling for it to get renewed next year.

Heroes tonight returned and brought with it Christopher Eccleston(DR. WHo) Do you realize they could kill off the entire cast and just replace them with new heroes if they wanted too? Better not ask for a pay raise Greg Gruneberg. I like the hokeyness of this show. Yeah I just said Hokeyness. Are the people in Blacksburg, Va happy now?

Wii Lan Adaptor Arrives.

So I got my lan adaptor for the Wii last night, finally got my updates, (which allow sd cards to be used). The Weather channel is pretty neat, but not something i'll probably ever use. I can see how this would sell the system to someone like my dad though. I pretty much just like spinning the earth around. The internet channel is o.k. but why would I want to be on the internet without a keyboard? I probably won't download the full version when it's released later this month. The Virtual Console is where all the fun is, and I downloaded Super Mario Bros for my first game. What a classic and now stored directly on my Wii front page. I'm going to have to limit myself but so many of those TurboGraphics games are very tempting since I have never owned Hudson's 16 bit powerhouse. Bonk's headbutts are calling. Well at least now I can get excited over Virtual Console monday's.

sf media tie in comics week

Star Trek The Next Generation The Space Between #1 0f 6 IDW publishing. The first Star Trek Comic released in years comes from IDW on this the 20th anniversary of the Next Generation. The story feels very TNG and the only complaint i can have is that it's set during the 1st year. I'd prefer to explore things that took place after the movies, to further the story but I can see how that could just be wishful thinking. The story has some good elements and the art is pretty good. All in all it's Star Trek in the four color boxes again and I'm definetly o.k. with that. b plus

BattleStar Galactica #5 Dynamite Publishing. More on the old cyclons and the returners and a setup for a pretty cool Sharon Valeri fight with herself. It's not really for anyone other than fans of the show and held to the shows' high standards it unfortunately can't compete. b-

first snow ruminations

we got our first real storm here over the night. I really hate driving in this stuff. I'm just not able to not squeeze the steering wheel so tight that my hand starts to hurt. I saw 7 PS3's in Target today. that's funny. Ended up getting a Insignia 27" lcd. its very pretty and bright. Ice hockey is blinding on it. Been watching some recently on dvd movies. Praire Home Companion and Mirror Mask. The former is o.k. but not great, the latter is a visual treat, but has that very Gaiamesque quality that you either like or hate. Got Miami Vice to watch in the snowstorm. I've been listening to Sleater Kinney lately. Where have all the good female fronted bands gone? In a moment i will be bundling up and going out for a snow lunch. maybe chinese?

Microsoft to buy capcom? woah nelly

O.k. so when Microsoft bought Rare from Nintendo we knew they were serious about gaming but now there's this nasty rumour their buying Capcom????? It makes sense from Microsofts point of view as they have been tryng to sell there name in Japan for the past ten years, but one has to wonder how many billions they will have to shell out for the house that made, mega man, street fighter, viewtiful joe, resident evil, ghost n goblins, okami, darkstalkers( this list goes on forever.) My only thought is why would Capcom agree to a foreign buyer? True most of the original talent has left the company but there is a huge resource of people there that can carry them for a long time to come. If this is true which I'm sure Bill Gates checkbook will try to make it sure, I will have no choice (hell im already saving for it) but to make my house a two console place and buy a 360. I mean if street fighter 4 or viewtiful joe 3 ever are announced, what is a fanboy to do.
current arms race.
Xbox 360 many checks for agressiveness, marketing.
Nintendo wii, pure joy.
Sony PS3. Why the hell would i buy that thing for? Another edition of madden? oh yeah im supposed to want a blue ray player. please but no thank you.

so techy, a question.

so ive been thinking about getting a hdtv. nothing too big, maybe 30inch widescreen lcd. you know the kind of thing that takes two weeks paycheck but gives back beautiful imaginary life data. I just cant decide between all the options out there. And I want to make sure it's somewhat future proof. I'll mostly use it for movies, and of course gaming (especially when i break down and buy a 360). Who out there has a good one you can recommend, that won't set me back too much and that can handle refresh rates of games and action movies?

Children of Men, Alfonso Curaon's latest is tight.

Just got back from seeing Children of Men a dark and not distant at all future, where people stopped having babies. The Human race went infertile. Meanwhile the world continued to go to hell as we are currently and countries like Great Britain shut their borders and started hunting down illegal aliens and detaining them in refugee camps. This isn't so far off that it's science fiction and it makes a nice backdrop for this piece which is really a well done action movie about a quest to save the worlds first baby in 20 some years. A nice thrill ride and a film that stands on it's own in style.
I give the movie an A and it should do well in the normally bleak January.

On another note I get the feeling the director has played Gears of War. Unfortanetly i couldn't find a shot of the refugee camp online and the battle scenes that take place there but compare the color scheme and explosions of the two shots below. When the bullets start flying at the end of the movie and Clive Owen is ducking for cover anywhere he can, I just kept seeing Gears of War, and I haven't even played the thing yet. We are almost to the point where film is borrowing more from games then games from film. still about ten years off but were almost there. And then the question will be who raises the bar first. Cinema or the Games industry?
