Cloverfield gets a B.

Cloverfield was probably the best movie Ive ever seen in January. That being said I had to watch more than half of the movie standing in the hallway beside the stadium seating. If you have any kind of motion sickness, think twice before seeing this movie on the big screen. Wont spoil anything for you but the monster does kick butt.

That The Dark Knight trailer that everyone saw this weekend at I Am Legend is now online. What do you think? Heath Ledger is actually pretty right as the Joker. Next summer is really shaping up nice. Next fall on the other hand may be the worst ever, thanks to the writers strike.

Speed Racer may change kids films forever.

Move over Pixar. If what Im hearing about the trailer for the Wachowski's(Matrix movies) new Speed Racer film animation may take a back seat to live action pretty soon. This image released from USA Today pretty much gives an idea of what kind of hyper cartoon/quasi live aciton thing we will be watching next summer. I'm sure like the Matrix films they did before this will spawn lots of imitators. But for now I just want to see the trailer that's supposed to hit the intertubes in the next couple of days.

UPDATE: The trailer is out HERE YOU GO The strike may hurt us next fall but the summer movie season looks fine.

movies and comics, oh my!

Went to see American Gangster last night. A very good crime flick and one of the only movies I've seen this year that feels like an oscar movie. Denzel Washington should get a nod and the direction of Ridley Scott is focused soley on the story he is telling. Very very good.

But I liked the Darjeeling Limited better. I've always had a soft spot for Wes Anderson and this is his most serious film yet. Makes me want to research Indian train lines.

Picked up Hellboy Darkness Calls #6 today and it ends the story for baba yaga yet again. It was a very good Hellboy story overall and I really really love the coloring in this book.

Also got Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-men # 23 and it was o.k. but not as emotionally charged as the past few issues. Give it a B.

King of Kong is a nice treat.

The King of Kong is a nice piece of documentary filmaking that really plays of the old underdog story so very nicely. The reason it works is the Underdog is a very likable guy and the champion is pretty much a jerk. The movie also delves deep into the arcade years and these arcade machines are just about two to three years before I learned of the wonders of the coinop. Of course I've played them all as they are indeed classics. Hollywood is already remaking this into a film so do yourself a favor, see the real story instead,

September movies.

Only two movies Ill venture out for this month. Lots of stuff out there but Im not going to be able to go to much this month. Next weekend 3.10 to Yuma comes out. One it's a western and two it has Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. Should be intense. Then two weeks later Milla comes calling in what Im sure will be a bad movie, but one must learn these mistakes on our own.

Movies!

Saw two movies this weekend. Both of them are o.k. for what they are but neither extremely outstanding. Stardust based on the book by Neil Gaiman is a wonderful throwback to the fantasy films of the 1980's which relied more on story than the LOTR spectacles we have been hit with over the past few years. It plays pretty well and Robert Deniro is wonderful in his role. A pretty good movie that I can see being better with age.


Superbad on the other hand is a one off comedy that tries to capture the old American Pie formula which in itself was trying to capture the teen movies of the 1980's. It succeeds at moments but it really doesn't make you care about the leads at all. Mclovin and his cop friends steal the show and their moments are the best parts of the movie.

Bourne Ultimatum

Just saw Bourne 3, very much like the first two, and that's a good thing. Some good chase scenes and one very good fight. A very nice way to start to wind down the summer.

Sunshine is a great old fashion scifi film for the first hour and a half, and then it becomes a weird horror film. Overall its pretty good and it's nice to see a science fiction film that doesn't rely on explosion after explosion. And Chris Evans can act. Should have never been in Fantastic Four.

New Warriors # 3 So much tech here, you have to wonder when Stark and his shield boys will come down hard on the group. Its a nice ride in the post civil war universe.

Sea Of Red finished the first two trades. One too go. Vampires and Pirates, can you go wrong much?

August Movies showdown

Oh August, the time of year when things shift from explosions to comedy to october's horror/oscar movies, back to the new winter explosion season. Well theres not much better than Bourne when it comes to action so this is a nice way to start the month.



Then there is Neil Gaiman
s Stardust, This is the movie Matthew Vaughan left xmen 3 for and it looks so darn terry gilliam I can't believe it.





The King of Kong is awesome documentary about Billy Mitchell and his competetion to be the best. At donkey kong. check out the trailer. you will want to see this.







And for our nonsense movie of the month, we could go with Superbad, or Rush Hour 3, but I think Christopher Walken seals it for us. Balls of Fury for sure.

The simpsons!!

Pure. Evil. Genius. Movie. This was a great way to spend an hour and a half of my life. It reminded me of why I used to love the Simpsons so much. One of the cleverest movies I've seen in quite some time.

Dark Horse has relaunched Dark Horse Presents as an online comic. You can find it HERE The first issue has a Joss Whedon story so you now know you have to check it out. Dark Horse Presents in the eighties launched a lot of careers and more importantly new comic thought. Let's hope it follows that tradition in it's online form.

I got the coolest Peas shirts from my brother yesterday. It has a Pirate Pea and an octupus on it and it's better than anything I could draw. Ill try to take a picture of it for everyone soon.

Star Trek at Comic-con

So on a day where there was supposed to be announcements galor we get this new Star Trek poster(oohhh retro) and confirmation that Zachary Quinto (SYlar from Heroes) is spock and Lenoard Nimoy is coming back to. and that's it. Oh well if they are really going to start filming in November, it won't be long till we hear who is going to be Kirk.
Indiana Jones posters are cool too. 2008 may be the best Geek year ever. It's nice to always think that, but frankly this year has been outstanding.

Leaving town, Transformers, and Comic reviews

Were leaving town early tommorow morning for Minnesota for a little Convergence and some much needed vacation time in the twin cities. So no updates till next thursday at the earliest.

Just saw Transformers and I got to say I enjoyed it alot. It's hard to redo a cartoon that has some many fans passionate and you cant help but feel a little bit squeezed when you only have two hours. Overall its fun, it's big and Optimus is very very cool. If you love explosions, well Michael Bay has plenty of them here and the special effects are phenomenal.

New Warriors #2 keeps the path of secrecy going and looks to become a nice little mystery before it's all done. The crew knows the history of these characthers and that always goes a long way.

July Movies

So July's movies have a very high built in audience as it is. There's also comedies like I know pronounce you Chuck and Larry that may steal the show but Transformers which is open now will probably be hard to topple right away.

Then on the 14th the juggernaunt tht is Harry Potter comes back to theatres.



Sunshine on July 20th will probably be the least money maker of them all, but it is from the director of Trainspotting and 28 days later Danny Boyle and it looks like a normal Sf movie which we usually dont get anymore in favor of the explosion type spectacle.

Lastly it's the movie 18 seasons in the making. The Simpsons. On the Big Screen. Everyone will go. Somewhere we will be dissapointed.

Fantastic Four 2 is actually pretty good.

I can't believe I'm writing this but Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer is actually pretty good. It's much better than Spiderman 3. I dont think I could have even thought that months ago.
The difference between this one and the first one is astonishing. The first was overly dramatic, cheesy and just too long winded. This one is still cheesy at times, but appropriate and the heroes powers are used at the right times and not just too show how cool they are. The one thing that really separates this movie from the other one though is Doug Jones as the Silver Surfer. It's amazing that a creature actor can have such a big impact. He was wonderful in Pan's Labrythinh and Ill have to go back and watch Hellboy to see him as Abe again. The characther deserves his own movie. One set entirely in space. It could be a great way for Marvel to expand their film Universe. Take him to the Kree Skrull war. You could make three movies on that alone. I just cant get over how cool the surfer is in this film even using cgi technology from terminator 2 era. I would much rather see Silver Surfer movie before we get a Fantastic Four 3. Still I will definetly be watching this movie on dvd.

Moon Knight#11 Mouse Guard, Oceans

Just got back from Ocean's 13. Its good stuff. Feel like some of the star power was wasted with such a large cast but its a good caper flick.

Picked up moon knight # 11 today. its the weakest issue in the series so far but still very good.


Also read Mouse Guard collection. Good stuff in the fantasy genre which comics don't have an abundance of.

Trailer buzz!

So the winter is going to continue in the past few years tradition of having big summer movies as well. In december we get Will Smith in I am Legend The trailer looks neat but Im afraid like I Robot before it it will be all action and none of Richard Matheson's original story. Hollywood has been trying to make this for years, so I hope it works out.

And then on Christmas we get Phillip Pullman's Golden Compass, which new line hopes launches a new franchise.

knocked up is knocked up funny!

A very nice comedy with a very sappy ending. This may very well steal the thunder from Mr. Depp and company. Once buzz spreads for this film. It has that borderline humor between gross and charming and just features a wonderful cast all around. Great if you need a laugh and hey who doesn't?

June Movies

Knocked up comes out today and looks to provide the 40 year old virgin fun of last year.

Then on June 8th is Ocean's 13 and the actors involved make these movies worth it.



Then on June 15th we have Fantastic Four 2. It doesn't have to be good, just better than the first one and I think everyone would be happy. Man we've lowered our standards.
