marie antoinette

Sofia Coppolla's latest is well unique and flawed film. pretty, pretty, and more pretty. but it's also very full of fluff. What I find strangest is that she potrays Antoinette as a partier who had no sense of the political climate around her. Most history majors will tell you this isn't even close to the story of the damned french queen but oh well, at least we get some cool dance numbers with great eighties music. The movie is not bad by any means and the eye revels in the sights, Dunst included, and it makes for some good movie going. Versailles looks amazing and huge and adds a lot of its own personality to the movie. I just feel like there could have been a little more real and a little less candy.

loveless # 12

Only one book this week. With a pretty wild finale at the end. I'm not sure what to make of the decision. Without ruining anything I can't say much more but really where do we go from here.

On the label side of things, Mark Schwaber's killing card cd, is tracking at number 70 played album on KALX, berkleys famous radio station. Pretty awesome stuff that is. Haven't got it yet? head on over to the main store and see what your missing.

the prestige

. What a solid movie. Great direction, wonderful acting. Can someone get Christian Bale a comedy? Please the man is just too intense. This film is gripping from start to finish, and unlike the illusionist earlier this year actually is filmed with skill, and nuance. Michael Caine is superb as usual, and Hugh Jackman and Bale are magnificent. Makes you wish we could have a batman versus wolverine film. Bravo. A plus. Now hunker down, Nolan, Caine, and Bale. And bring me the Dark Knight.

this day.

His World Her World # 7 is complete and will make it's debut at the Bittersweetnessandlight table at the Madison Zine Fest in Madison Wi this saturday the 21st. After that it will start showing up in it's regular places.

Three big movies this weekend. The Prestige looks to be the best, followed by Eastwood's Flags of our Fathers, though I'm more interested in seeing his Letters from Iwo Jima in feburary, and Marie Antoinette from Lost in Translation's Soffia Coppola.

One month till Wii day and also that overpriced but pretty PS3. then we will have to wait another five-six years for this kind of hype again.

My plan for the afternoon? I'm going to go pull out the Sega Genesis, play some championship ProAm, some X-men, and get ready for Lost tonight. What a wonderful way to spend a rainy afternoon.

The Science of Sleep

Went to see Michel Gondry's The Science of Sleep last night and felt like it's the best piece of alternative cinema we've had in a while. Gael Garcia Bernal is perfectly cast as a young man living more in his dreamworld than in the day to day moments of his regular life. The film uses many of Gondry's tricks which after viewing his music videos in the
Director Series Dvd made it easy for me to spot how he was doing such cool things on screen. It's a visual treat and the story , that is at times funny, and sweet, ends by making you wonder just how much good you should feel, and how long can you stay asleep.

battlestar , more civil war.

Battlestar Galactica # 2 O.k. so I think everyone is aware that I think Battlestar is the best show on Television, with Lost coming in second, sorry. So of course I enjoy this book. It's not as gritty as the show and is a little more sci-fi but that's o.k. by me.

Civil War Frontline # 7. continues to serve as a backup piece to the main Civil War. Writing is good and art is o.k. Not as good as the main story but o.k. Alright I'm off to get ready for Lost tonight. yeah!

back in iowa, 2046

I'm back in Iowa. Didn't get to see everyone I wanted too in greenville but got spend some good time with my brother which was nice. Ate lots of good food, and saw some good things.

Got home and watched
2046 which i have to take back tommorow. Pretty film, with great perfomances by Tony Lueng and Zhang Zhiyi, and really atmospheric direction by Wong Kar Wai, but I'm not sure how much I liked the movie over the actual images. It's really not amazing by any means, but for fans of wide angle shots, and beautiful cinema it's worth it.

O.k. this should be back to more normal postings this week.

quick update from greenville, nc

Saw the Departed on friday. if you like Hong Kong action flicks you've got to see this. It's everythings that's great about those movies (minus bullet time-thank god) and is played by some of our best actors working today. Then went to see Ecu's ice hockey team kill william and mary. Yes Ice hockey in greenville. Spent Saturday tailgating, and then watching East Carolina demolish Virginia. Pretty great weekend so far. Now I'm a little under the weather and am going to sit on the couch and watch the battlestar premiere from friday night.

Comic Impressions.

So no new comics for me this week so I thought I'd share some impressions I've got from some of the ones I read on my lunch break at work.

The current run on Uncanny X-men, is very talky but the whole shiar storyline reminds me a lot of the late eighties sci-fi wasteland x-men that I loved so much. remember Jim Lee X-men?

A graphic novel worth checking out is American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang. It's unique in the fact that it's a indy but visually reads like a cartoon. Good stuff.

Grant Morrison's Batman run too me is just too hokey. Too 70's batman. I miss the dark in the dark knight.

This is Hilarious. Robert Kirkman's
Marvel Zombies is as good as it gets. It's amazing what some zombie action can do for your storytelling ability. Galactus never saw the zombies coming that's for sure.

O.k. i'm heading out to NC until tuesday, a trip I've had planned since January. It's too bad I planned it so early because next week too of my very good friends are getting married. And I'm going to miss it. :< Anyway. I'll try to get online over the weekend. Enjoy Lost tonight!

burger king enters the gaming business?

1st off let me admit, I love the burger king mascot. He's so creepy and just the right amount of odd that he does what every good mascot should do. Make you uneasy.
I havent set foot inside a Burger king in years. but that will change come Nov 19th as they are releasing three Xbox 360 games for just $ 4 each. I don't have a 360 yet but come on three games starring the King for $4 each. sign me up.
The games are Pocket Bike Racer a take on Mario Kart, starring the king, and some meat and fries. On Bikes!
There's also Big Bumpin, which is a bumper car game! A BUMPER CAR GAME?
And then what's got to be the best one,
Sneak King

Yeah. you've seen the commercials where the King stalks people. Now you can play it. WOW.
I'm sure these games will be horrid, but come on people. Sneak KING. Your Mission to deliver Burger king food to hungry people. by sneaking up on them. Awesome.
