Saw They Might Be Giants, I might be tired.

Went out last night to see They Might Be Giants. They put on a really good show and it was nice to see them on campus so I could actually breathe during the show. Had to be up at six for work this morning so Im pretty darn tired. Excuse me while I go play eternal sonata and maybe some lost planet.

General.

Had a good weekend. The Pirates lost, which sucked but got to go pick some apples, and watch some emmy's and generally was pretty lazy which is nice now and again. Gearing up for a busy week. Tommorow we are going to see THEY MIght Be Giants. Should be a good show.

Smashing Pumpkins Tarantula

So this video proves what many have known. Smashing Pumpkins are Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin minus James Iha and D'arcy and including a bunch of new people. Still sounds like Pumpkins which leads one to believe all those Corgan wrote all the music anyway rants from the nineties. Anyone else picking up Zeitgest?

a blow to my heart.

"As much as it breaks our hearts to write these words, the final issue of Punk Planet is in the post, possibly heading toward you right now." that's how an email I just received started. This is really bad news as one of the last great music magazines out has called it a day. Also one of the last places the really tiny operations like Lucky Creature could afford to run ads in. I have feelings of saying that's it, it's over call it a day, print is dead. But I don't really believe that. Print lives on but it's a different monster now, and it can't continue to be something sold en masse. And music some could argue as sold as physical discs is dead, but again it's now a different monster and it can't be sold the same way. We as the small labels, and publishers have to change our way of operating, or die. It's easy for me. Maybe I shouldn't say this because it speaks volumes, but I have lost money on EVERYTHING I have ever released. Some more than others. Things like the Exercises in Breathing cd came close to breaking even(mostly because I toured with it for four years but other's even the wonderful Mark Schwaber album(possibly the best sounding cd we've ever done) have sold far less than we had hoped. It's strange, things we should be having trouble selling like Lucky Creature Attacks are easily our most succesful. It's a strange time to be in the print business but it's where we will stay. Sure we may only release 3-4 items a year, but they will be on paper, on disc, on vinyl, and in your hands. Maybe someone will come along a fill the void left by Punk Planet. I doubt it. Most likely we will get another Rolling Stone or god forbid Alternative Press. Come what may, Lucky Creature isn't going anywhere, and I encourage the other labels and publishers out there, to keep on publishing, searching and working. Print is not dead, it's just a different monster.

Empire! Empire! (I was a lonely estate) CD

So I just received a copy of Empire! Empire! (I was a lonely Estate)'s debut cd "When the Sea Becomes a Giant"
It is very good stuff, and should please fans of mineral, and pretty much anyone who likes music. The band likes long song titles and names and everything just sounds very very good.
You can sample a few songs on their myspace page and the band tells me youll be able to order it around feburary 16th from smartpunk.com . I'd recommend you all pick it up.

And remember members of this band appear on our compilation "our history and our future" in the band Sea Defeats Sparrow.

Appleseed Cast, Asobi Sesku, Skursula

Show last night was pretty good. It's strange but I can definetly see that Appleseed doesn't hold the same place they did for me so long ago. They are such a good, tight, talented band. But now after so many bands they also seem quite boring. Its a shame because there not doing anything wrong and there songs are as good now as they were then, my ears have just changed over time I guess.
Asobi Sesku really rocks and I suggest anyone who can go see this band, It's like a new wave blonde redhead.
And the best band for me throughout the evening was Iowa City's own Skursula. Check out their Myspace page for a taste and I have a feeling you'll get into it as well.

Going out in a bit to see Appleseed Cast, Asobi Sesku and Skursula tonight. I first saw Appleseed Cast when I set up a show for them at my high school. Yeah it's been that long ago. It's amazing they are still a band. Anyway it will be the first show I've braved in quite some time. I think its a good thing, as I've receded more and more into my little computer/quais office in my free time.

so i've been unable to get online much this week so not too much posting here. Also I've been too enthralled in Zelda Twilight Princess to really care to. Im on the final dungeon. A little over 40 hours in and it looks like i will beat the game today. A lot of other things i could still do, like the endurance dungeon and explore the world but for some reason, all i want to do is fight fight fight. It is definetly worth the price of the console by itself, but it isn't my game of the year. that honor goes to New Super Mario Brothers for the DS. it's more accesible, and just more fun.

Got the new Owen cd. some of the songs i swear i've heard before but if your a fan of any of the kinsella brothers you know your going to want this cd.

Also watched the Devil and Daniel Johnston. That's pretty crazy stuff.

Danger DOOM "The Mouse and The MAsk." I've always found that MF DOOM has been what hip hop should be. He's fun, bright, and enjoyable. There are no social negatives to this type of hip hop. No ganster rap, no demeaning references to women. On this album , basically a promotion for Adult Swim, the collaboration brings about a wonderful treat to fans of any of the shows especially Aqua Teen Hunger Force. This cd is funny and to hear Meatwad rap at the end will make even the most dull of you laugh. The best songs are Sofa King, Vats of Wine, and Bada Bing. I remember when Cartoon Network released the Brak cd so many years ago. It was fun but apealled mainly to a niche audience. This cd, on the other hand is hip hop at it's best and could easily be listened to on any drive through town.
But it helps if you like cartoons.


Winner of best picture way back in 1960, The Apartment is a great funny film starring Jack Lemmon before he was a grumpy old man about a man who lends his apartment to his bosses and their affairs. It's funny how little has changed in that regard. Anyway Lemmon and Shirley Maclaine are great in this and even though it has the trappings of Late fifties film and a rather hollywood ending, it's definetly worth your time.
A best picture oscar that still is great.

milemarker,lords, saviours, show reviews

Wow, I guess metal is back, The Saviours out of Oakland, Ca opened the show with five long completely orchestrated metal songs. It was tight musically and yes very loud. Local band Humans follwed and they were bright happy jangly pop. Then the lords came on stage. I had heard so many good things about this band I wasn't sure what to expect. They blast through their metal with insane speed and ambition and had me dancing for the first time in a while.

Finally Milemarker came on. I first saw Milemarker way back in chapel hill around 1998. They were a three piece then and they played your basic post hardcore stuff. I then later opened for them in 2000 at the greenville hardcore fest when they were a crazy 5-6 piece. They've retained that mass ensemble thing even though many of the members are different. Their set was good as they blasted through their anthems and they had two drummers playing pretty much in unison through the entire show. pretty neat stuff for the cold winter night.

echoes.

do you think we leave echoes? I first thought about this when i was home visiting my family a couple of years ago and i was expecting my cat to come running down the stairs at any moment, even though i Knew she was back in Massachusettes. But since we had lived in that apartment before it just felt natural that she should be there. I keep thinking about people that I may never see again and I wonder if they have left an echo in my brain that certain sights and sounds can trigger. You know how sometimes there's someone you pretty much forgotten and then one day out of the blue your smiling about a memory of them? It's strange and eerie, because it's almost like remebering someone who has passed away, even though these people aren't dead. I wonder if I've left any echoes, any footprints on any of you, and if there good ones or bad ones? And what happens to those echoes that make you forget them as soon as your mind has wandered elsewhere?



we had our first full snow last night and i'm inside playing astro boy for the gameboy, and going to watch dawn of the dead(the remake) later. I'm ready to go out in the snow, but it's easier to stay warm inside. And by the way I'm all for Al La Carte Cable. my chanel lineup would be the Espn networks(for college sports), comedy central(for jon stewart), scifi(battlestar Galactica), cartoon(aqua teen Hunger Force, toonami), and I'd get TLC for Jess. worse case scenario say thats five bucks a channel, id much rather pay 25 for that than 50 for all that crap i'll never watch. Hope congress presses this issue, cause I want me some Cable!
