Cloverfield gets a B.

Cloverfield was probably the best movie Ive ever seen in January. That being said I had to watch more than half of the movie standing in the hallway beside the stadium seating. If you have any kind of motion sickness, think twice before seeing this movie on the big screen. Wont spoil anything for you but the monster does kick butt.

O.k. I know I haven't really spent much time on comics lately. Still been reading them, just been too busy to really pay much attention to review them. But Fell #9 from Mr. Warren Ellis and Mr. Ben Templesmith does it again. In just 16 pages it manages to tell a complete story, use storytelling techniques brand new to the medium and look absolutely amazing. It's one of the few comics left today that are worth the wait. Another fine issue. A Plus.

Call for Submissions:
We are accepting submissions for next years edition of Lucky Creature Attacks from now until July 30th, 2008. We are looking for comics, short stories, poetry, illustrations and all kinds of creative material to be included in our yearly anthology. This years issue does not have a specific theme although we are calling it the Pocket Sized Edition as the (image) size is only 5" by 4". There is no minimun or maximum page count for submissions. Stories can be as short or as long as required to tell the story.
All accepted entries receive copies of the book. issue three will have letterpress covers by our friends at Heroes and Criminals Press. There is no pay involved but free copies for all the participants.
All questions, submissions, and other intrests should be sent to luckycreaturelabel@hotmail.com
Winning Entries will be contacted no later than August 1st, 2008 with publication to follow in fall of 2008.

Best comics, Fell, Jason's I killed Adolf Hitler, Scalped, Astonishing X-men, and Moon Knight.

Best Book. The Orc King by R.A. Salvatore.

Weirdest book. The League of Extraordinary Gentleman The Black Dossier.

Interesting thing. No music of real excitement this year.

Best Games. Bioshock, Super Mario Galaxy.

Best movies. BSG Razor, 2046, Pirates 3.

Worst dissapointment. Spider Man 3.

I know I am. I just want the primary's to be over so I can cast my vote next november. It is not a sport but that is what the media has turned it into. It's like these canidates have fans and the one who can sell the most merchandise will be declared the winner.
I mean in the end we all just want to vote for someone so that we can wash the last eight years out of our mouths right?

That The Dark Knight trailer that everyone saw this weekend at I Am Legend is now online. What do you think? Heath Ledger is actually pretty right as the Joker. Next summer is really shaping up nice. Next fall on the other hand may be the worst ever, thanks to the writers strike.

Lucky Creature Attacks # 2 was mailed to the artists today, and is completely ready for ordering! Inside you'll find rules for entering next years edition, "the Pocket sized edition' We will announce the rules online in the next couple of weeks but for now go ahead and get issue # 2.

Speed Racer may change kids films forever.

Move over Pixar. If what Im hearing about the trailer for the Wachowski's(Matrix movies) new Speed Racer film animation may take a back seat to live action pretty soon. This image released from USA Today pretty much gives an idea of what kind of hyper cartoon/quasi live aciton thing we will be watching next summer. I'm sure like the Matrix films they did before this will spawn lots of imitators. But for now I just want to see the trailer that's supposed to hit the intertubes in the next couple of days.

UPDATE: The trailer is out HERE YOU GO The strike may hurt us next fall but the summer movie season looks fine.

We are mailing the artists their copies on monday, so all's well in the world. We are already working on issue no 3 for next fall so it shouldn't be coming out so late next time.

movies and comics, oh my!

Went to see American Gangster last night. A very good crime flick and one of the only movies I've seen this year that feels like an oscar movie. Denzel Washington should get a nod and the direction of Ridley Scott is focused soley on the story he is telling. Very very good.

But I liked the Darjeeling Limited better. I've always had a soft spot for Wes Anderson and this is his most serious film yet. Makes me want to research Indian train lines.

Picked up Hellboy Darkness Calls #6 today and it ends the story for baba yaga yet again. It was a very good Hellboy story overall and I really really love the coloring in this book.

Also got Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-men # 23 and it was o.k. but not as emotionally charged as the past few issues. Give it a B.

Something seems off on this years The Office. It's missing that uneasy tension that made it so great. It seems with Pam and Jim getting together, you no longer have that tension, you know longer feel akward with Steve Carrell, now your just used to it. And the whole Dwight-Angela thing is just overplayed. That is one very long run on sentence I just wrote. My english teachers are ashamed.

The King of Kong is a nice piece of documentary filmaking that really plays of the old underdog story so very nicely. The reason it works is the Underdog is a very likable guy and the champion is pretty much a jerk. The movie also delves deep into the arcade years and these arcade machines are just about two to three years before I learned of the wonders of the coinop. Of course I've played them all as they are indeed classics. Hollywood is already remaking this into a film so do yourself a favor, see the real story instead,

It's premier week. It started last night with a better than usual family guy star wars edition, and continues tonight with nbc's quasi scifi night of Chuck, HEROES, and Journeyman,
Wed has Bionic Woman and in two weeks Pushing Daisies. Bionic may actually be great since David Eick of BSG is producing. Let's hope. What new shows will work, what will be gone in two weeks? Oh the fun of running a network.

I think its safe to say friday is going to be new peas comic day. I really like this once a week thing. It gives me the chance to get a few weeks ahead and usually the topics aren't that current events related so that works in my favor. So until further notice Peas will have a new strip up every single friday. yeah! So what do long time peas readers think about the color online strips?
We have a super project about halfway done for Peas, and it will be quite affordable for those who are interested. Should be done sometime in the next month or so.

Been fooling around with my new PSP lite. Im pretty pleased so far. Haven't had the chance to use the TV out yet since Im going to get those cables on Tuesday but everything is pretty shiny. The PSP like the DS just seems more fluid for me than the home consoles. I guess it's a lot about the time you have to spend gaming. Just this morning I put in Darkstalkers and blew through the arcade mode in twenty minutes. It was fun, short and I won't mind doing it again. Better than fifty odd hours blasting repetivite gangsters on a home console for sure. It seems most of my enjoyment is nostalgia driven as my list for psp games are basically all collections of eighties games and loco roco. And Im not even participating in the thriving homebrew scene for the PSP. And then on Xbox I basically just play the arcade games from my youth. Like Worms which was fine when it was on a 100 SNES and has no reason to need the power of the 400 360 Im playing it on now minus being online. Should Game companies be worried that more and more 'casual' games take up our time? You could go Nintendo's route and go mini game crazy but that might be taking it to far. I havent hit the power button on my Wii since March when I finished Super Paper Mario. That probably makes all of you scrounging to get one pretty mad. I love the Wii but refuse to play what's being released for it at the moment. With success hopefully there will still be some hardcore games coming our way. They don't have to be epic, just not made for four year olds. Don't get me wrong. There's still great original games coming out. Bioshock just last week blew me away and Im gearing up for Eternal Sonata. We just need a little more freshness. And a little less rehash. O.k. Done ranting. Anyone want to play Worms?

Game Audio.

Playing through Bioshock, I'm amazed at the amount of detail being etched into these imaginary worlds. As good as the graphics are and the big daddy's scare, where Bioshock really succeeds is in the audio department. When you hear a lady screaming down the hall, or a moan from around the corner it really sends chills up your spine. That and the jazz that comes on randomly throughout just amps the tension to 11. Im only about six hours in, and from what I've heard Im close to one of the major twists in the game. So far I'm not just looking at the game of the year, but also the Oscars for sound design and cinematography. It's too bad Hollywood would only butcher this adaptation.

Only two movies Ill venture out for this month. Lots of stuff out there but Im not going to be able to go to much this month. Next weekend 3.10 to Yuma comes out. One it's a western and two it has Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. Should be intense. Then two weeks later Milla comes calling in what Im sure will be a bad movie, but one must learn these mistakes on our own.

I got cable! Well almost. they will be turning on the basic package today. I can watch BSG and college football from the comfort of my own couch hopefully starting tonight. The only scary thing is it really screwed up my internet for a couple of hours last night. I really hate cable prices. The day I buy a house, the ole satellite dish is going up right away.

Astonishing X-Men #22. Wow. that last three pages just hit so hard. If Joss Whedon doesn't get back to scripting film soon then it's a real shame. This book is the most cinematic the X-men have ever been and they all just feel so right. Seriously, when Whedon leaves comics, which all indicators point to soon, the film world better be ready. John Cassady's art is superb as well. APLUS best single issue I've read in quite some time.

Tommorow, along with my fresh copy of Bioshock I am picking up the Serenity Collector's edition DVD. This is the only time I have bought a dvd I already own a version of and here's why. It's one of the best movies for just plain watching. It has wonderful packaging, and just possibly if enough people rebuy this dvd, we will get more Serenity/Firefly. I asked you all to go see this in the theatre. I asked you to buy the first dvd. If you didn't do either of these, YOU OWE ME. It's going for about 17.99 at most big boxes tommorow. The best twenty bucks you could spend on something SHINY!

Saw two movies this weekend. Both of them are o.k. for what they are but neither extremely outstanding. Stardust based on the book by Neil Gaiman is a wonderful throwback to the fantasy films of the 1980's which relied more on story than the LOTR spectacles we have been hit with over the past few years. It plays pretty well and Robert Deniro is wonderful in his role. A pretty good movie that I can see being better with age.

Superbad on the other hand is a one off comedy that tries to capture the old American Pie formula which in itself was trying to capture the teen movies of the 1980's. It succeeds at moments but it really doesn't make you care about the leads at all. Mclovin and his cop friends steal the show and their moments are the best parts of the movie.

Loveless # 19. Wow. finally the story gets going again. I was slowly giving up on this book but not now. Tight story telling and the art is back at top form.

The Immortal Iron Fist. Hardcover collecting the first six issues. If you would have told me that in 2007 two of marvel's coolest characthers would be Luke Cage and Iron Fist I would have laughed. Brian Bendis made Cage relevant again and this is what Matt Fraction and Ed Brubaker have done with Iron Fist. A must for any fan of Martial Arts comics.

Anders Nilsen's Dogs and Water is sparse in it's renderings and it's pacing is almost dreamlike. He leaves alot for the reader to figure out and that is quite alright. One of the better indie books I've seen this year.

I will be working on a top secret project the first week of september and hopefully it will launch that same week. Been very busy. hope all is well.

Bioshock demo wows.

This is how you make games as art. Make it still a game and yet add sooo much atmosphere, like the jazz and the posters and other things that you feel like your watching a movie. A really great movie. Granted I had really great hopes for this game to begin with, but after playing through it the only thing I can say is it's very immersive. That freaking plane through the glass tunnel was awesome and the water effects are amazing. My only concern is that the game may end up being to hard for me. I did the demo on medium but I think I will play through it on easy when it hits retail. Id hate to end up missing the beauty of this world of rapture they've created because I was dying too much. Bioshock even though its not horror like the resident evils, it may truly be the game to scare me. It's already pretty unnerving watching the Big Daddy's and the little sisters. If the game lives up to the demo, we may have our game of the year out on Aug 21st.

Jess made me a great coaster so that I wont risk ruining another keyboard with my unexplainable need to always have some form of drink around the computer at all times. Hopefully that tempers that. We completed two more pages of His World Her World tonight. It should be our best issue yet. So good in fact you may want to hide the pets and break out the sake to celebrate with us.
I'm heading to Anime Iowa this weekend to realize how old I am. Anime cons are the cons where you deal with people anywhere from 8 to well my age. Im old at this con and that's just weird. But I'm o.k. with that, because it means Im the hip 'old' guy. UGHH... That was painful to write. That's alright though because this year there is a track of panels for old anime. Meaning the stuff I actually remember and not Naruto, or Fullmetal. Stuff that came out before the internet and you paid twenty dollars for 30 mins of animation. What world were we living in when $20 seemed reasonible for an episode of Tenchi Muyo? On VHS? anyway this is my second trip to Anime Iowa and it's only ten minutes down the road at the beautiful new Marriot. Bring the Pocky, Im ready.

Just saw Bourne 3, very much like the first two, and that's a good thing. Some good chase scenes and one very good fight. A very nice way to start to wind down the summer.

Sunshine is a great old fashion scifi film for the first hour and a half, and then it becomes a weird horror film. Overall its pretty good and it's nice to see a science fiction film that doesn't rely on explosion after explosion. And Chris Evans can act. Should have never been in Fantastic Four.

New Warriors # 3 So much tech here, you have to wonder when Stark and his shield boys will come down hard on the group. Its a nice ride in the post civil war universe.

Sea Of Red finished the first two trades. One too go. Vampires and Pirates, can you go wrong much?

Oh August, the time of year when things shift from explosions to comedy to october's horror/oscar movies, back to the new winter explosion season. Well theres not much better than Bourne when it comes to action so this is a nice way to start the month.

Then there is Neil Gaiman
s Stardust, This is the movie Matthew Vaughan left xmen 3 for and it looks so darn terry gilliam I can't believe it.

The King of Kong is awesome documentary about Billy Mitchell and his competetion to be the best. At donkey kong. check out the trailer. you will want to see this.

And for our nonsense movie of the month, we could go with Superbad, or Rush Hour 3, but I think Christopher Walken seals it for us. Balls of Fury for sure.

Pure. Evil. Genius. Movie. This was a great way to spend an hour and a half of my life. It reminded me of why I used to love the Simpsons so much. One of the cleverest movies I've seen in quite some time.

Dark Horse has relaunched Dark Horse Presents as an online comic. You can find it HERE The first issue has a Joss Whedon story so you now know you have to check it out. Dark Horse Presents in the eighties launched a lot of careers and more importantly new comic thought. Let's hope it follows that tradition in it's online form.

I got the coolest Peas shirts from my brother yesterday. It has a Pirate Pea and an octupus on it and it's better than anything I could draw. Ill try to take a picture of it for everyone soon.

So on a day where there was supposed to be announcements galor we get this new Star Trek poster(oohhh retro) and confirmation that Zachary Quinto (SYlar from Heroes) is spock and Lenoard Nimoy is coming back to. and that's it. Oh well if they are really going to start filming in November, it won't be long till we hear who is going to be Kirk.
Indiana Jones posters are cool too. 2008 may be the best Geek year ever. It's nice to always think that, but frankly this year has been outstanding.

Does anyone else feel like their reading a mythology lesson when reading this book. It's so good. And Baba Yaga is very well done in just the few panels she appears in. This is one of the best Hellboy stories yet.

I really like Bomberman Live. 8 players doing nothing but blowing each other up. And it's so cute that I always find it funny when people with gears of wars gamertags are playing it. Both games your mission is to kill, but you couldn't find two farther examples of killing than Bomberman's cute I win! to the chainsaws of Gears. Anyway, point is I suck at Bomberman Live. Havent won one silly tournament. I need to get better or the enjoyment will seriously wane. I need a trainer, are you up to the challenge?

Harry Potter comes out.

Last night I worked the Harry Potter release. I don't think I've ever seen that many people in a retail establishment in my life. Tonight at work may be just as bad as all the people who didn't stay up late come swarming in. I wonder how long it will be till we see this kind of phenomenon in bookstores again. It may never happen. Harry benefited alot from the fact that popular culture became a machine sometime in the 80's especially children's popular culture. It's such a media driven market now, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. But will a new series build it's audience with each release the way Harry did? One can only hope.

Comic reviews, Lenore, Zero Killer

Zero Killer is a brand new comic by the author of the Rex Mundi series. In this universe the world has gone nuclear back in the 70's and the New York skyscrapers have become the home for many different gangs who battle to stay high up in the air. The story follows Zero who feels like a bounty hunter in this first issue. The art is great and Dave Stewart does a great job with the colors as usual.

Lenore #13 Roman Dirge takes Lenore into the world of color and it looks nice but doesnt really affect the story in any way. Lenore is still her distrubing cute little self and she still has some pretty whacked out companions along for the ride. Very funny stuff and there is a reason this comic is as popular as it is.

Also read the Gaurdians miniseries that Marvel put out a few years ago. It's a nice coming of age story involving all kinds of aliens. It's not bad if you can find it in your quarter bins at your local shop.

LCA # 2 will have a running theme of PLAY, and will this time be published in standard comic book format.
